Ship Customization Guide
Customize your Tides of Fortune ships with tileset structures, TOF Lights, Aquariums, cannon mounts, and Ship Skill Tree bonuses for unique vessel builds.
Customization Systems Overview
Tides of Fortune ships are blank canvases. Beyond choosing between the Sloop and Brigantine hull classes, captains customize vessels with tileset structures, cosmetic elements, cannon configurations, and Ship Skill Tree bonuses that collectively define each ship's role. No two fleets look or perform identically — customization is where naval ARK diverges most from traditional tame-based gameplay.
Structural customization uses Tides of Fortune building pieces placed directly on ship decks. Aquatic Compartments transport tames, storage compartments hold treasure hauls, and additional cannon mounts expand firepower. Cosmetic options include TOF Lights for night sailing aesthetics, Aquarium decorations for Luxury builds, and paint regions for tribal branding.
Skill tree investments provide the performance layer beneath physical customization. A fully customized Piracy Sloop with maximum cannon mounts and damage bonuses plays fundamentally differently from a Merchant Brigantine optimized for cargo compartments and trade efficiency — even though both use the same hull classes.
Tileset Structures and Deck Layout
Tileset structures snap to designated placement zones on your ship's deck. Plan layouts before committing resources — moving structures after placement may require demolition and rebuild. Combat-focused ships prioritize cannon mounts and ammunition storage near gun positions. Trade vessels maximize cargo compartments and Cargo Ledger access.
Aquatic Compartments allow tame transport across ocean biomes without leaving creatures in the open water. This is essential for Genesis missions requiring specific tames and for relocating breeding pairs between tribal bases. Compartments add weight that slightly affects speed, so combat Sloops typically skip them in favor of agility.
The Aquarium structure serves dual purposes: Luxury skill tree synergy for morale bonuses and genuine aesthetic appeal for captains who want their Brigantine to look the part of a prestigious flagship. Luxury investments make Aquariums more than decoration — they provide passive perks that reward aesthetic commitment.
Cannon and Combat Customization
Base ships arrive with several pre-mounted cannons, but additional mounts expand your broadside potential. Each mount adds weight and repair cost, so balance firepower against speed requirements. Sloop captains typically retain the default loadout to preserve maneuverability, while Brigantine captains add mounts to maximize per-volley damage in fleet engagements.
Specialist ammunition types add tactical variety. Experiment with different ammo for various engagement ranges and target types. Ammunition storage compartments near gun positions reduce reload downtime during extended battles — a small customization choice that wins close fleet engagements.
Pair physical cannon customization with Piracy skill tree investments for maximum combat effectiveness. The Piracy active ability unlocked by completing a full tree row synergizes with heavy cannon loadouts on Brigantines designed as line-of-battle ships.
Cosmetic and Luxury Customization
TOF Lights illuminate your vessel for night operations and tribal identification. Luxury skill tree perks enhance light range and add morale bonuses for extended voyages. Paint regions allow custom color schemes — essential for fleet identification during multi-ship engagements where friendly fire is a real risk.
The Luxury skill tree is the primary performance path for cosmetic-focused builds, but its perks extend beyond aesthetics. Crew comfort bonuses, reduced fatigue on long voyages, and utility improvements make Luxury investments valuable for exploration-focused captains who spend hours sailing the Genesis ocean.
Bob's True Tales cosmetic skins from the season pass add additional visual options for captains who want their fleet to reflect their investment in the full ARK naval experience. Skins are purely cosmetic and do not affect ship performance.
Build Planning and Optimization
Plan your customization before building at the Shipyard. Decide your ship's primary role — combat, trade, exploration, or hybrid — and select structures and skill investments accordingly. Changing specializations mid-season is expensive due to demolition costs and skill point respec limitations.
Use the Ship Skill Planner to theorycraft skill tree combinations before spending milestone points. Cross-reference planned skills with your intended tileset layout to ensure physical and performance customization align.
